In Sixteen
to Life, the primary characters are two sixteen year old girls dealing
with family and peer issues surrounding their love of punk rock
music. Shelly is the daughter of a rock musician of local fame,
she is pressured into playing the guitar as a way of connecting
with her father. Amy is a straight-laced Pakistani girl drawn
to the love of the music itself, fighting with her fiercely conservative
step-father for her independence. The finale of the movie is a
battle of the bands, where old friends reunite and Shelly's practical
hope is to '"not suck, just this once."
The
film features punk rock music, skateboarding, teenage angst, after-school
jobs and dingy music clubs. The directors intention is to make a
Sixteen Candles for the next generation, creating a piece
that will appeal both to teenagers and nostalgic thirty-somethings.
